Thomas Rhett and his wife Lauren are new parents!
As of Friday May 11 Rhett and Lauren brought home their daughter, Willa Gray Atkins. The couple adopted Willa from Uganda, Africa.
Rhett and Lauren told People that picking Willa up from the airport felt like “Christmas Day”.
“It felt like a dream,” Lauren said. “I’ve dreamed of all of us being on the same continent for so long. It finally feels like everyone is where they’re supposed to be.”
Rhett and Lauren started the adoption process in 2016 after Lauren went to Uganda with the non-profit organization 147 Million Orphans and met their future daughter. Willa has been an orphan since she was born, her Ugandan name translates to ‘blessing’.
“Lauren had this amazing glow about her, and it just felt lie she was already our daughter in a weird way. I just blurted out, ‘We should bring her home’.” Rhett said after seeing pictures of Lauren and their future daughter.
As many know, adoption is not a simple process. The couple had huge amounts of legal documents, red tape and at least a dozen trips to Uganda before they could bring Willa home.
Shortly after the process began, it became more complex when Lauren found out she was pregnant. Lauren is due in August and traveled in her third trimester in hopes to bring Willa home. But Lauren had to come back for a checkup before the adoption was finalized.
“I probably could have pushed it, but I just didn’t want to think something could go wrong with my pregnancy. It felt weird leaving one daughter and making sure the other one is okay. But I couldn’t do it another way.” Lauren said.
Luckily, Lauren’s parents were able to be in Uganda and this week they reunited their granddaughter with her new parents.
The couple has taken to social media to express their joy and gratitude for Willa being in their live at last.
